Created/Shoot and Produced by Alberto Peschard
Wanting to share with the world the creative process he goes though producing fine art paintings, the inventor of Hedley Standwell, Bil Arscott, created the online painting show "Bil Paints" (bilpaints.com).
As a life long professional Filmmaker, Bil has plenty of cinematographer friends willing to help shoot segments but due to the sporadic work schedules of the industry, much of the recording ended up happening in the middle of the night.
"12 O'clock in the morning is not a good time to ask for favors." - Bil Arscott
Bil quickly discovered what a problem it is to properly frame and light yourself. "I can frame myself using background landmarks (unless on seamless), I can light air (with a meter), I can check the results on a monitor... but the back-and-forth, re-hitting my mark, re-adjusting lights, re-adjusting framing is a frustrating waste of time and energy."
To make his shoots run more efficient, Bil started using a flesh painted mannequin head (his wife is a Visual Stylist) as a framing/lighting placeholder. Because Bil wears glasses, he put an old pair of glasses on the head to check for reflections. With this, Hedley Standwell was born.
AH HA! Immediately, Bil realized what a helpful tool this was and how he could utilize Hedley Standwell in his professional world and share it as a lighting and framing tool.
Bil realized that if Hadley Standwell was going to be truly useful for lighting all ethnicities universally, he had to be a tone that is an internationally excepted reference . Enter 18% Gray.
So why 18% Gray....
18% gray is the "geometric mean" between black (3.5 %) and white (95%). It's mid point on a logarithmic or exponential curve. That means it's roughly half way in the middle of black and white. 18% gray was first used by printers in the newspaper business in the 1870's as a base measurement. In film/video and still photography it functions in the exact same manner. It's a base reference. Strangely, 18% gray also reflects the exact amount of light that its being illuminated with. This makes 18% gray the perfect lighting reference, because you will always know how much light you're working with.
In production there have been many major changes over the years. Today, clients want their shoots produced cheaper and faster but at a quality that is higher than ever before. And with current pandemic conditions, using Hedley means less people on set. Unfortunately, in a lot of cases, this means cutbacks in crew size. And with a smaller crew, it's absolutely vital that everyone is focused and performs at the the peak of their skills . Because of this, it makes no sense at all to have a highly trained, highly paid professional leave their specific critical job to stand in for lighting or risk the safety of talent, crews or extras. It's just not safe, efficient or wise in todays fast paced, health conscious production market.
Also, once Hedley Standwell is mounted to a C-stand, he can be adjusted to match the height of any on-camera talent. Whether standing, sitting in a chair, in a car, laying down, petty much any way you can rig a C-stand, Hedley can go there and stay there safely. Even in the most uncomfortable positions.
Motion picture companies,Television stations and stage owners: He's the perfect placeholder for talent.
Directors of Photography (D.P.s), Stage Lighting Directors (L.D.s) and Gaffers:
He's the prefect tool for pre-lighting on sets, television studios and live stage venues.
One Man/Woman Band Crew and
PrEditors Journalist: Working solo without help.
Assistant Camera (A.C.s): For Practicing focus pulls, setting marks and for auditioning of lens.
Art Directors (A.D.s): Lining up product placement, set design and scale reference. Remember, Hedley can be adjusted to any actor's height!
Directors: For pre-blocking and confirming camera composition while actors are still in make up/ wardrobe.
And especially Producers and production companies: Hedley can be first person on set and last to leave. He's always standing by, he's never on his phone, you don't have to feed him, you don't have to do any deal paperwork or wait for his overdue invoice!
Your Hedley Standwell Professional Stand-In Kit comes with one (1) 18% gray, matte finish, Hedley head. A 5/8 "baby" spud, a red hi-visibility bubble wrap protective bag (soft kit), 1 pair of Hedley Standwell reflection testing glasses, a multi pack of eyes/focus targets, a color chart T-shirt for matching cameras, a custom hanger with a 5/8 receiver. A tape measure (?) Why a tape measure? Because if you know how tall talent is, you can have Hedley match the height .You can order a soft carry case with handles and a shoulder strap or a hard custom case with a carrying handle and locking hatches
